Assemblage Series

We must admit, we are suckers for mosaics. The thrill of approaching a piece of art with the gradual reveal of being an assemblage of some sort never gets old. Florida-based artist Zac Freeman, too, clearly has an affinity for the conglomeration of smaller pieces to build a whole. And he does it masterfully. His “Assemblage Series” is an incredible approach to portraiture. His raw materials are objects of everyday life, skillfully positioned to produce subtle shading and colors that even capture the subjects’ expressions. Part of the novelty of Freeman’s work is that it’s not digital, but tangible objects. “It is very important to me that I incorporate the actual objects into the art as opposed to a picture or rendition of it because it better expresses the intention of the artwork. I feel the junk is more powerful being present. It is an actual thing to be reckoned with that existed in this time and place and carries energy in and of itself.”
